Fighting the good fight

Keeping on with my procrastination spree.

I have recently bought the Avernun 4 game, from Spiderweb Software. Avernum was originally a remake of the old exile series, which were a series of suberb computer role playing games. The technology is kinda old (well, not much for a Nethack player), but the game more than compensates with a well thought out world, good history and dialogue. Also, the company is kind of an independent game house, unlike big gaming companies who just pump out sequel after sequel every year and treat their consumer like shit, with things like stupid automated e-mails whenever you ask for support. I had e-mailed spiderweb with some questions before ordering, and got such a nice answer from them!

Talking about independent gaming companies, and cold giants, I will mention also the “galatic civilization” series. This is another company which produces independent games. It seems that some of their employees worked in the MOO series, and their games seems to support that legacy. I actually heard about this one on a discussion on slashdot. It seems that Starforce, a company which produces DRM for some popular games (DRM = digital restrictions management - in other words, copy protection), has published an web address where you could get pirated copies of Galatic Civilizations. This because GalCiv does not use draconian DRM schemes like those produced by Starforce. Talk about Mafia-esque like tatics.
